Star Trek 829: Deadly Reflection!

829. Deadly Reflection!

PUBLICATION: Star Trek #11, DC Comics, February 1985

CREATORS: Mike W. Barr (writer), Tom Sutton and Ricardo Villagran (artists)

STARDATE: 8217.2 (follows the last issue)

PLOT: Mirror Kirk commandeers the Excelsior and sends his Spock on the bird-of-prey to Vulcan to analyze our Spock and thus get the secret of a working Genesis Device. Meanwhile, Kirk and crew escape from the brig and commandeer the mirror Enterprise. There, they find Marlena, still the captain's woman but now working with rebels to overthrow the Empire. Mirror Spock mindmelds with our Spock, still in a coma from the fal-tor-pan, but our Spock uses that meld to help heal himself. Meanwhile, Kirk's battle against the Excelsior doesn't go well, especially when mirror Kirk activates the Enterprise's self-destruct sequence...

CONTINUITY: Excelsior, Captain Styles, the Mirror Universe, Sarek, T'Lar, Amanda, all as per previous issues. Mirror Spock decided not to heed Kirk's advice and hasn't destroyed the Empire. Marlena has risen in rank to commander since Mirror, Mirror. Mirror Kirk still has the Tantalus field and is interested in the Genesis Device which his universe never perfected (it's why he killed Carol Marcus a few issues ago). Spock's mirror parents were killed by the Empire.

DIVERGENCES: None, beyond those discussed under the last issue.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Oh he's evil alright.
REVIEW: Mirror universe stories are fun, and so's this one, even if it takes a while before you really have a handle on who's who. The mirror uniforms are a darker shade of red, but the designs are close enough that close-ups don't always register well. We deviate more and more from The Voyage Home's status quo, but it's still dynamic storytelling. I'm not complaining. And Styles gets humiliated, which is just like I want him.
