Star Trek 1373: Mission's End, Issue 3

1373. Mission's End, Issue 3

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Mission's End #3, IDW Comics, May 2009

CREATORS: Ty Templeton (writer), Steve Molnar (artist)

STARDATE: 5951.2 (follows the last issue)

PLOT: McCoy's survey team is caught by the "crawlers" of Archernar IV who are more intelligent than previously believed and who want the doctor to heal them when they return from battle. Meanwhile, Kirk, Spock and Cassady must complete the signing of the treaty with the spider-people despite recent unrest. Up on the Enterprise, the Section 31 agent "Moore" contacts the Orion Syndicate and tells them the location of Archernar and its powerful planetary generator, but Uhura detects the transmission. During the signing ceremony, the crawlers attack and steal a piece of the generator. Kirk is injured in the skirmish...

CONTINUITY: See previous issue (Sarek, Nogura, Section 31). Starfleet hopes they don't have to give General Order 24 regarding Archernar IV - to destroy all life on the planet (A Taste of Armageddon, Whom Gods Destroy).

DIVERGENCES: Though these events follow those of stardate 6835.7, they hold a stardate that follows the events of 6 months earlier.

PANEL OF THE DAY - There's just something about a giant bug with a spear that I can't resist.
REVIEW: Well, some nice action, and the mystery of "agent Moore" continues to deepen. Who is he really working for? Are the Orions falling into a trap? Is he just a mercenary used by S31 and now used by the Orions? Hopefully, everything will be satisfactorily revealed. The spiders and crawlers contrast well with the usual bipedal forms that pepper the galaxy, but I do find the lettering they use to speak a little hard to read at times. A minor quibble. Oh, and I love it when Uhura is instrumental in a mission's success. Two issues to go, let's kick some Orion butt.
